Education - Initial Thoughts

The group topic I was given was education, along with Callum, Natasha and Alicia. As a
group we found it very difficult to devise material. A key thing in enabling us to create work was honing in on the specific element of education within human rights that we wanted to explore. Education is a very broad topic in terms of human rights and therefore to have any impact on the audience our work had to be clear and defined in the message we were communicating, hence why a smaller area within this bigger issue had to be picked first. To begin with we thought about a lot of different routes through this issues, eventually landing on the issues around young people being denied or having to face perilous conditions to get an education in third word countries, as well as the difference in class, money and lifestyle in how first world richer children are given an extensive education automatically and the inequality in this. This lead us to think about Malala, and how her right to education was taken away simply because she was a women. Factors that she has no control, ie: where she is born or her gender, mean that the quality of life she experience becomes different to everyone else and she no longer has access to something that so many children take for granted.  Putting this into devising material, it made us thinking about the brutality & violence that was involved in her struggle to get an education, because Malala spoke out about the injustice that was occurring in 2012 a taliban gunman attempted to murder her. The violence in preventing education was able to form a base/theme for our piece.
